The Ludmilla Creek catchment is an area in the middle of Darwin for locals to escape the rat race for a moment and observe nature at work. A bit like looking into a fire, the passive activity of watching birds hunt for food, skinks dodging in and out of cover, or a cycad reacting to seasonal change with a new set of leaves can provide a sense of relaxation and even inspiration. So seeing the bush being invaded by weeds or used as a dumping ground creates an incentive to protect it and retain its values.
Ludmilla Creek
Landcare Group works to promote the values of the creek and involve the
community in natural resource management, planning and restoration.
Engaging the
community is a vital part of their work. We all know how important ownership is
for taking care of things. So the group has put in paths and educational signs
to encourage interaction, ownership and participation in natural resource
management.
This video provides
a bit of the story of Ludmilla Landcare group. Hopefully you will be inspired
to go out into bushland, appreciate the complex system at work and the values
it can provide, and feel the urge to pull a weed or two, whether on your block
or on public land. And hopefully, like the story of Ludmilla Landcare, you will
gain a sense of achievement when you realise that you are actually helping to
conserve the native wildlife and public amenity in your patch.
